Assessment outcomes, achievement gaps, referrals, and intervention lists are the fruit of a deeper system. Roots & Results® helps leaders examine what sits beneath those outcomes: foundational skills, the quality and consistency of Tier 1 instruction, intervention design, leadership routines, teacher expertise, and school culture.
The Six Roots
Root 1: Foundational Literacy
Build the language, decoding, fluency, knowledge, and writing foundations students need to access increasingly complex learning.

K–2:
Prevention First:
Build language, literacy, numeracy, and learning foundations early; identify needs quickly; strengthen Tier 1; and intervene before gaps compound.
Grades 3–8: Acceleration With Access:
Address unfinished foundational learning while preserving access to grade-level knowledge, complex text, mathematical reasoning, writing, and disciplinary learning.

Root Audit™ process
Listen and frame:
Clarify the problem of practice, goals, context, constraints, and current initiatives
Gather evidence:
Review data, schedules, curriculum, assessments, intervention plans, professional learning, walkthrough information, and stakeholder perspectives.
Find root causes:
Distinguish symptoms from system conditions and identify where inconsistency, misalignment, or capacity gaps are constraining results.
Prioritize:
Select a manageable number of high-leverage actions, owners, milestones, and measures.
Support implementation:
Provide tools, learning, coaching, monitoring, and adjustments as the work moves into practice.
